‘She Must Stop Picking On Me!’

Pat is working in a large, impersonal organisation. Nine months previously, he had been reallocated to work in another department. His new boss, Pauline, seems to think that he was not suited to the department and she finds fault with every aspect of his work. He is finding the situation intolerable. He begins to demonstrate all the signs of chronic stress and eventually goes to see Dr Bill. They review the problem together and come up with the following ‘A’ and ‘B’:

AActivating Event:

•Trigger: his boss giving him unachievable deadlines and unmanageable workloads

•Inference/Danger: He is being picked on; he will eventually be fired.

BBelief/Demands: They identify some key unhealthy beliefs/demands which are at the heart of Pat’s distress and which are leading to most of his symptoms: He must make his boss like him; if she does not, he will not be able to cope; he must not lose his job; he is a failure because he doesn’t stand up for himself.
